La Barrique de Bordeaux

Cab. Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab. Franc • Bordeaux AOC

La Barrique is a superb claret made using tiny parcels of grapes from hugely expensive spots in Pomerol (think Pétrus at £1,000), Pauillac (from vines abutting £800 Château Latour), Grand Cru Saint Emilion and Margaux. It's complex, rich and long.

This is one of a small number of clarets our head winemaker, Jean-Marc Sauboua, has added to the range, when he finds quality particularly outstanding. The concept behind the wine is also very much along the same innovative, irreverent and often rule-breaking lines that the Le Chai team follow.

La Barrique is made by two winemakers who own no vineyards (sound familiar?). Instead they 'cherry pick' grapes from premium pockets of Pomerol, Margaux, Saint-Émilion and Pauillac that meet their exacting standards with the sole aim of making the best possible claret at an affordable price. This glorious claret is the outcome.

Decant an hour beforehand to let those flavours open out fully. It's a thoroughly enjoyable claret, showing at its best alongside roast leg of lamb with plenty of rosemary and garlic or slow-braised lamb shanks.

The scent of cassis, ripe berry fruits, cedar wood and pencil shavings blend with layers of black fruits for an elegant finish.
