Le Grand Chai Haut-Médoc
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot • Haut-Médoc AOC
Our Le Grand Chai wine may have the revered Haut-Médoc words on the label, but the grapes are taken from an even loftier appellation than that. No wonder this wine is so sumptuous, with rich deep fruit, oaky length and real class.
Chief winemaker at Le Chai, Jean-Marc Sauboua, is king of contacts, which is why he's able to source the finest parcels of grapes every vintage. This luscious claret may be Haut-Médoc on the label, but all the grapes are in fact from a top Listrac property. There, one of JMS's oldest wine friends and the inspiration behind his red wine making all through his career, Bernard Lartigue, has a superb Cru Bourgeois estate. It wasn't too hard then to persuade Bernard to part with a portion of his gorgeous Listrac fruit. Crafted at this grand property, then brought to Le Chai for ageing a year in fine oak barrels, this is a densely fruit-driven, smooth and richly satisfying Bordeaux with firm tannins that give it classic structure and the wherewithal to age. For drinking now, decant an hour before serving or tuck your bottles away for a year or so. A fine choice with roast red meats.
Aromas of intense cassis, dark plum and oak notes. Velvety rich, ripe blackcurrant and juicy plum allied with firm tannins.
