Château Le Coin Blanc
Sauvignon Gris • Bordeaux AOC
Sauvignon Blanc we all know well, but Sauvignon Gris? Now that's another matter entirely, rare in Bordeaux and unheard of as a single varietal. This is a fabulous, spicy white with real breadth and a zip of citrus from a terrific family estate.
This characterful, rich, yet brilliant, citrus-focused Sauvignon Gris is a collaboration between our own chief winemaker, Haut-Brion trained Jean-Marc Sauboua, and owner of Château Le Coin Ludovic Roussillon. Ludovic's superb, well tended estate – he is an ace viticulturalist – lies just over the river from Le Chai au Quai, in the Entre-Deux-Mers. His claret is always a great hit and four years ago we persuaded him to make us a white too, using all estate-grown grapes. The soils are quite phenomenal - the limestone helping to produce real concentration in the fruit. About 5% was oak fermented to lend a little extra richness and breadth, as did small amounts of old-vine Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Delicious solo or with white meats or a creamy gratin.
Rich aromas of earthy apricot, citrus and a hint of spice. Rounded with broad creamy peach and underlying lemony zip.
